Cinco de Mayo in Twin Cities

Is it me or does it seem like Cinco de Mayo came so fast this year?! Thankfully, the holiday falls on Sunday this year which means it is about to be a weekend of celebrations throughout the Cities.

Here’s what you can expect:

There are 2 major festivals, one in St. Paul on Saturday and one in Minneapolis on Sunday, each with great music and delicious food. If you are looking for something more laid-back and calm, there are plenty of Mexican restaurants in the Cities to support local restaurants serving up some of the best authentic food!

St. Paul Festival on Saturday

Cinco de Mayo – West Side St. Paul will be held this Saturday on Cesar Chavez street from 9 AM – 4 PM. You can expect events for the entire family, starting off with a parade running from Wabasha to Ada at 9:30 AM. Following that, you are invited to head towards Cesar Chavez Street for taco and hot dog eating contests, a “placita” market with handmade goods, and performances by local groups. There will no doubt be lots of people at this celebration as it is dubbed the largest Hispanic/Latino event in MN.

Minneapolis Festival on Sunday

The Cinco de Mayo Minneapolis Festival is held outdoors on Sunday from noon – 8 PM, outside of El Nuevo Rodeo on E. Lake St., with an indoor after party for those who want to keep rollin’ til 2 AM. They will have live music on their 3 stages, lots and lots of food and some beer gardens for you to enjoy. It will definitely be packed with event-goers.

If food is what you are looking for, there are some amazing spots to check out for high-quality Mexican cuisine.

  • Taqueria La Hacienda on Lake Street is home to some of the best burritos in the Twin Cities, with awards to prove it! Not to mention, their prices are pretty affordable for the quantity you are getting.

  • El Burrito Mercado in St. Paul is another laid-back option with mouth-watering enchiladas and refreshing margaritas. They will be hosting a celebration all weekend with DJ’s, cash prizes and lots of delicious food.

  • Not far from Lake Harriet sits La Fresca, another great spot with colorful walls and a cozy interior (if you aren’t relaxing on the patio that is). Their churros are also a must!!

  • I Heart Tacos Food Truck will be having their grand opening on Sunday starting at noon at the Norseman Distillery. Be sure to get there early because once they run out they are done

  • Centro in the Northeast will have brunch starting at 10 AM along with drink specials throughout the day.

  • If you are near Central Ave in Minneapolis, Maya Cuisine is the place for you. They will be offering special combos of pop, a burrito, chips & salsa for $10 cash, while also selling $3 margs/$2 beers.

Whatever you do, enjoy the weekend & have some sangria in my honor.
